Question by ms_wheedler: Since NASCAR serves no useful purpose, should it be discontinued as an war effort to save oil?
How many people waste gas to travel to NASCAR races just to watch the drivers turn left? Isn’t this a mindless, resource wasting sport?
My dear conservative friend Ruth – bad mood this evening? I drive back and forth to work and stop at the grocery store on my way home, or walk to the store. The hemp tote works “swell.” You might try to answer the question next time and see if you can get a “best answer.” I hold no prejudices, unlike some I know.

Opinions are like a-holes everyone has one and most stink!
That’s just how I feel about public transportation. Shut it down and save all that oil.
Nooooooo…….. americans would never stand for being inconvenieced ahile we have a war going on,,,,,, example 9 trillion dolllar deficit
That requires sacrifice. We may be in the midst of “the defining struggle of our generation” (Bush’s words, not mine) but oddly no one has been asked or appears willing to make the slightest sacrifices.
And if you ask the chickenhawks to sacrifice or even why there’s no draft for this alleged defining struggle, well, you’re a liberal scum who hates America.
Sounds good to me! You can see it on TV as well or better!
Racing fuel is expensive too! Make them stop driving in circles!
aren’t you late for your PETA meeting? Why is this more wastefull than driving to the movies, driving to the beach, driving to the latest protest rally? Soap operas, The View, and CNN are a waste of airwaves, why don’t you whine about these?
Sure, but since we are banning a sport, we also need to ban hollywood movies, the SUV’s that transport movie stars also use too much oil & gas. I guess that goes for the RV’s that certain liberals like to travel in. We then need to ban all protests as well, since people have to drive to them, in fact, lets bad moveon.org, since the website consumes too much electricty….along with that, we can ban MTV, daliy kos, etc.etc, for using too much energy for no reasonable purpose…
what about all the marketing opportunities and advertising dollars that would be lost? do you want to let the terrorists win?
* i wonder how much gasoline is burned in the NASCAR circuit.
How is it the rest of the sporting world useful? Bounce a ball and throw it in a hole? Throw ball to large man if he catches it he gets knocked down by more large guys. Hit ball and run in a square to the left? That covers the big Basketball, Football and Baseball. Many of the same people are wasting gas to travel to these mindless games too. Not to mention what we pay the guys to play these children’s games.
Actually, the gas the cars use is more akin to aircraft fuel. Yes, people waste alot of gas going to races. But if you are going to ban them, then also do the rock/rap concerts, theme parks, h8ll, may as well ban all vacations, what a waste of gas! So you can continue with this to a ridiculous point.
Back in the early ’70s, the same thing happened during the Oil Embargo, and the NASCAR league did shorten some races in consideration of the scarcity of gasoline, I believe. Not that it amounted to a tanker of gas, as like you said, spectators probably burn 10,000 times more gas than the entire race field combined, plus their tow rigs. But they didn’t stop racing, just modified their behavior some , in token response to the issue.
And, I’d hardly say NASCAR serves no useful purpose – it keeps tens of thousands of rednecks off the road for several weekend days, they gotta park and be at the racetrack for 7-8 hours at least, the fan-atics much longer. So the main roads are more likely to be open than not. And they contribute to the local economy quite a bit. Personally, I have no use for marathons, state fairs, and other things, but to each their own. Leave well enough alone. I like to go to the occasional race myself.

Yes, because we wouldn’t want to cut down on trips to the grocery store with that one hemp shopping bag, now would we? LOL
The school buses in a medium-sized city burn more gas in a day than all of NASCAR burns in two years.
No, really, someone actually did a study.
